Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) commemorated the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on 87th anniversary of his passing with a ceremony held at EMU Atatürk Monument on Monday, 10 November 2025 at 08:45 a.m. Organized in collaboration with EMU Atatürk Research and Application Center (ATAUM) and EMU Atatürk Ideology Club (ADK), the ceremony was attended by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu, Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren, academic and administrative personnel, and students.
Within the scope of the ceremony program, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç placed a wreath at Atatürk Monument at 09:00 a.m. Then, on behalf of EMU ATAUM, Dr. Devran Kaya read the ‘10 November Declaration’.
“Established a Modern Republic Respected By All”
Dr. Devran Kaya noted that the 87th anniversary of the passing of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Türkiye, should not be seen only as a day of mourning. He highlighted its significance for fully understanding Atatürk’s 57-year life, his struggle and his contributions to the Turkish state. Dr. Kaya explained that Atatürk, despite limited means, resisted the most advanced weaponry of his time, closed one chapter of history and opened a new one, ultimately establishing a modern Republic respected by all. Dr. Kaya stated that Atatürk’s principles and reforms were embraced by Turkish Cypriots willingly and without pressure. Dr. Kaya underlined that the great leader’s determination, the responsibilities he entrusted to the nation and the goals he set must be remembered at all times.
“Among the Most Influential Leaders Not Only in Turkish History But Also Globally”
Delivering a speech following the observance of A Minute of Silence and National Anthem, Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç stated that they honour Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Türkiye, with profound respect, gratitude and remembrance on the 87th anniversary of his passing. Prof. Dr. Kılıç highlighted that Atatürk stands among the most influential leaders not only in Turkish history but also globally. He also reminded the audience of Atatürk’s unwavering belief in the Republic and the Turkish nation, quoting his words: “Every mortal will one day return to the earth, yet the Republic of Türkiye shall live forever”.
Prof. Dr. Kılıç noted that 10th of November is not only a day of remembrance, but also a time to reflect on the values, principles and ideals Atatürk entrusted to the nation and to carry them forward. He stated that Atatürk’s dedication to science, reason and education served as an inspiration not only for the Turkish people but for all humanity. Saying; “It is our duty to follow the path laid out by the Great Leader Atatürk and to continually advance our Republic guided by reason and science, grounded in democracy and human rights”, Prof. Dr. Kılıç underlined that Atatürk’s path is not a memory of the past, but the most reliable compass for the future.
At the end of his speech, Prof. Dr. Kılıç remembered Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades in arms, who sacrificed their lives for the homeland, with respect and longing. Quoting from the “Atatürk’ten Son Mektup / Last Letter from Atatürk” poem by Halim Avcıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Kılıç explained that truly understanding Mustafa Kemal means keeping his legacy alive not just through words, but through science, effort, and productive action.
The ceremony concluded with a piano performance by EMU Faculty of Education, Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Atakan Sarı who performed a variety of marches.
