Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Sexual Abuse and Sexual Assault Support Unit (CTS) and EMU Human Resources Directorate co-organized an in-service training program titled “Trauma-Informed Approach Training” led by EMU-CTS Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süheyla Üçışık Erbilen and EMU Human Resources Director Ruhşem Arkaar Hamit.
Trauma, Communication, and Legal Processes Addressed Together
Within the scope of the program, Prof. Dr. Şenel Hüsnü Raman and Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilek Çelik, faculty members of the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Psychology, provided information on trauma psychology, communication with individuals during crisis situations, and psychological first aid.
EMU Faculty of Law members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bezar Eylem Ekinci and Assist. Prof. Dr. Nurcan Gündüz delivered presentations on the legal framework, rights-based perspectives, and the legal responsibilities associated with incidents that may arise within the campus environment.
The program also featured contributions from Specialist Psychologist Özlem Erginsoylu from Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center (PDRAM), who shared insights into the experiences of professionals working with individuals exposed to trauma and provided information aimed at strengthening staff members’ psychological resilience against the secondary effects of trauma.
The training program comprehensively addressed topics including how to approach individuals who have experienced trauma, the importance of effective communication during crisis situations, the referral of victims to appropriate support services, and the responsibilities of security personnel throughout these processes. The program was designed to enhance participants’ awareness of situations they may encounter in the field and to encourage the development of a more sensitive, inclusive, and informed approach.
EMU CTS
The EMU Sexual Harassment and Assault Support Unit (CTS) ultimately aims to establish a campus environment free from sexual violence. The unit consists of expert academics from various disciplines including Law, Psychology, Educational Sciences, Sociology, and Gender Studies. In cases involving sexual harassment or assault, CTS provides support to individuals subjected to violence regarding process management and guidance throughout the relevant procedures.
