Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç released a message on the occasion of May 19, Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. The message of Prof. Dr. Kılıç reads as follows:

“Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s arrival in Samsun on 19 May 1919 to initiate our nation’s struggle for independence remains a historic symbol of determination, perseverance and the power of national sovereignty. This significant day also stands as one of the strongest expressions of the confidence and belief invested in our youth, who are regarded as the safeguard of our future.

Today, we proudly and enthusiastically celebrate the 107th anniversary of this meaningful day. Exactly 107 years ago, on 19 May 1919, our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived in Samsun aboard the Bandırma Ferry and laid the foundations of the Republic of Türkiye. Regarded as the beginning of the War of Independence, the national struggle, and national sovereignty against the occupation of the Allied Powers, 19 May was dedicated to the youth of Türkiye by Atatürk, as a symbol of hope and the future.

The celebration of 19 May, one of the most important turning points in the history of Republic of Turkey, as the Youth and Sports Day is one of the greatest indicators of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s value and trust in the youth. As Eastern Mediterranean University, we are proud to raise individuals who are modern, innovative, inquisitive, and equipped with a strong sense of social responsibility, in accordance with the principles and vision established by Atatürk. We firmly believe that our youth, who embrace and preserve the values entrusted to us by Atatürk, are the driving force that will lead our country toward greater progress in science, art, sports, and all areas of life, while also shaping a future founded on peace, freedom, and enlightenment.

With these sentiments, I wholeheartedly wish a happy 19 May, Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day to our society, especially our youth. I commemorate Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye and his comrades-in-arms, with respect and great longing.”
