EMU and Famagusta Municipality Launch Strong Partnership for Urban Development

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and Famagusta Municipality (FM) officially launched a partnership through the signing of a cooperation protocol at the EMU Rector’s Office. The protocol aims to expand and enhance sporting, artistic, cultural, social, and scientific activities across the city.

The protocol was signed by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç and Famagusta Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay. Also present during the signing session were EMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu and Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren, EMU Rectorate Private Secretary Director Kazım Hakverdi and visiting delegation from the Municipality of Famagusta.

Under the collaboration protocol, the parties aim to develop social, cultural, sporting, and educational activities for all segments of society, particularly young people, women, children, and persons with disabilities. The protocol’s priorities include organizing arts, cultural, and city festivals; preserving local culture; promoting multiculturalism; and developing projects aimed at enhancing the city’s visibility through international events. They also include safeguarding the city’s historical and cultural heritage, encouraging volunteer initiatives, and developing community engagement projects.

The protocol also aims to facilitate joint initiatives in the fields of environment, sustainability, healthy living, science, technology, and innovation; expand lifelong learning opportunities; and develop projects supported by national and international funding programs.

“EMU Aims to Build a Strong Foundation”

Speaking at the protocol signing ceremony, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç emphasised that the University is guided not only by academic excellence but also by a strong sense of social responsibility. He stated that partnerships of this kind, which contribute to the development of Famagusta, are of great importance to the University. Highlighting EMU’s commitment to building a strong foundation across a range of fields, particularly in sports, Prof. Dr. Kılıç noted that the joint initiatives to be undertaken with the Municipality would have a far-reaching impact by benefiting both the University’s students and the wider community. He further stated that EMU aims to promote a culture of sports, encourage young people to engage in a variety of sporting disciplines, and contribute to social development through close cooperation with local authorities.

“A Major Asset for the City”

In his remarks, Famagusta Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay described Eastern Mediterranean University as a tremendous asset not only to Famagusta but to the entire Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He noted that EMU has made significant contributions to the country through higher education and has established a strong international reputation thanks to the quality of its education and the achievements of its graduates. Dr. Uluçay emphasised that the partnership with the University represents a major gain for the city. He explained that while the collaboration was initially envisaged as focusing on sporting activities, it was expanded following the University’s recommendations to also encompass artistic, cultural, social, and scientific initiatives. He added that he believes this comprehensive approach will make a meaningful contribution to the city’s development and community life.
