Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç issued a statement on the 62anniversary of 8 August – Erenköy Resistance. The message reads as follows:
“We commemorate the 62nd anniversary of 8 August – the Glorious Erenköy Resistance – with profound respect and gratitude, honoring it as one of the enduring symbols of the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for freedom, dignity, and existence. The struggle waged in Erenköy was more than an act of resistance; it stands as one of the most powerful examples of how faith, courage, and devotion to one’s homeland can unite people around a common cause. The determination demonstrated under challenging circumstances reflected the Turkish Cypriot people’s resolve to safeguard their future and secured the Erenköy Resistance an unforgettable place in our history.
On 5 August 1964, Turkish Cypriots displayed an epic resistance against the numerically and militarily superior Greek Cypriot and Greek forces that launched an offensive aimed at eliminating the Turkish population in the region. Defending their land at the cost of their lives and refusing to surrender, the Turkish Cypriots demonstrated extraordinary courage that earned its place in history.
During this significant resistance, the selfless commitment demonstrated by university students who, despite their young age, assumed great responsibility while pursuing their studies at various universities abroad, together with that of our mücahit (fighters), stands as one of the most valuable examples of national consciousness and dedication to shared values. The Erenköy Resistance holds a significant place in the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence. The determination and spirit of solidarity displayed during the resistance continue to serve as an important source of inspiration for social unity today.
Universities are not only institutions that produce scientific knowledge, but also important pillars of society that preserve and pass on history, cultural values, and collective memory to future generations. As Eastern Mediterranean University, we regard it as an important responsibility to keep alive the historical significance of the Erenköy Resistance, one of the defining moments in the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence, and to pass on to younger generations the values of unity, solidarity, and responsibility that emerged from this struggle.
With these thoughts and sentiments, on the 62nd anniversary of the Glorious Erenköy Resistance, I commemorate with profound respect our cherished martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland and nation. I also extend my deepest respect and gratitude to our heroic veterans and to all the mücahit who contributed to the Erenköy Resistance.”
