Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Pharmacy, White Coat Ceremony took place on Thursday, 25 September 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Green Hall of EMU Faculty of Pharmacy. Nearly 60 students wore their white coats during the ceremony held within the scope of the 25 September World Pharmacists Day.
Present during the said event were; Acting President of EMU Board of Trustees (VYK) Halil İbrahim Orun, Acting EMU Rector and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, EMU General Secretary Derviş Ekşici, Dean of EMU Faculty of Pharmacy Prof. dr. H. Ozan Gülcan, Dean of EMU Faculty of Dentistry Prof. Dr. Hikmet Solak, Dean of EMU Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, Dean of EMU Faculty of Communication Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy, Vice Deans of EMU Faculty of Pharmacy Assist. Prof. Dr. Jale Yüzügülen and Assist. Prof. Dr. Emine Dilek Özyılmaz, students and families.
The ceremony commenced with the observation of a moment of silence and the National Anthem, and continued with a promotional video of EMU and Faculty of Pharmacy, followed by opening speeches.
“An Ever-Lasting Profession”
In his address, Dean Prof. Dr. H. Ozan Gülcan emphasized EMU’s status as a globally recognized institution and highlighted the important role of the Faculty of Pharmacy within it. He noted that since its establishment in 2011, the faculty has graduated over 1,300 students from various countries and provides a modern, high-quality education supported by a strong academic team. Congratulating the students as they took their first professional step by wearing their white coats, Prof. Dr. Gülcan also shared insights on the history of World Pharmacists Day and celebrated the occasion with the young future pharmacists. Stressing the noble nature of the pharmacy profession, Prof. Dr. Gülcan pointed out that as long as humanity exists, illnesses and treatments will persist, making pharmacy a truly enduring profession. He further added that the faculty enjoys global recognition and holds international accreditations.
“A Clinical Health Science with a Vital Role”
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, the Acting EMU Rector and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, expressed how pleased he was to take part in this significant event on 25 September World Pharmacists Day. Prof. Dr. Karatepe emphasized that pharmacy is a clinical health science linking medicine and chemistry, playing a crucial role in disease prevention and treatment. He continued; “The white coat is more than just attire—it represents science, responsibility, ethical principles, and dedication to human health. By putting it on today, you are committing not only to learning but also to using that knowledge for the good of humanity”. Prof. Dr. Karatepe stated his belief that the students will grow into competent, ethically responsible pharmacists who serve society through an education of international standards. He expressed his gratitude to the families for their support and to the faculty members for mentoring the students. Prof. Dr. Karatepe concluded his remarks by wishing all students a successful and rewarding academic year.
A Message from VYK President Dr. Erdal Özcenk
Unable to attend the event, EMU VYK President Dr. Erdal Özcenk sent a message for the students which read: “The white coat represents dedication to science, humanity and ethical values.Today, you are taking the first step of a sacred profession. I am proud of each and every one of you, and wish you continuous success in your journey. May your path be bright”.
Following the presentation of white coats, the ceremony concluded with a first lecture titled “Effective Communication” by Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy, the Dean of EMU Faculty of Communication. EMU Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr. H. Ozan Gülcan present a bouquet to Prof. Dr. Ersoy for their contribution to the event.
