Annually organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Translation and Interpretation, the 15th edition of the “Audio-Visual Translation Days” demonstrated the creativity and professional competency of young candidate translators. Held on 26-28 May 2025, the event offered participants an opportunity to showcase their professional skills and share their creative work.
Professional Presentations from Young Translators
As part of their graduation projects, students from the department gave seminar presentations and worked on translating films. Final-year students Arzu Alp, Buğrahan Kaya, Başak Gülten, Ece Gömdeniz, Selin İpek Aknar, and Şevval Sude Dumanoğlu presented the translation and subtitle synchronization processes of the films they worked on, sharing their experiences with the audience.
Carried out in a workshop-style format, the seminars explored audio-visual translation through both theoretical frameworks and hands-on examples. Participants were introduced to a broad spectrum of information, including recent technological advancements in the field and techniques for subtitle translation and synchronization.
“Our Goal is to Train Well-Equipped and Visionary Professionals for the Industry”
Senior Instructor Neslihan Binatlı Hekimoğlu, who served as the Department Coordinator and Academic Advisor for the event, emphasized that the projects reflected a rigorous preparation period and shared her pride in the students with these words:
“The film translation projects completed by our students within their graduation studies are professional and rigorous efforts that showcase their theoretical understanding alongside their technical capabilities. These projects require not only technical proficiency but also cultural awareness and in-depth knowledge, all of which our students have successfully demonstrated.”
Hekimoğlu highlighted that the surge of digital platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime has significantly increased worldwide demand for audio-visual translation. She emphasized that the EMU Translation and Interpretation Department is committed to producing graduates who are both skilled and forward-thinking to fulfil this growing industry requirement.
A Tradition, an Unchanged Vision: 15-Year Journey
Marking its 15th year, the Audio-visual Translation Days underscored the event’s significant contribution to EMU’s institutional legacy and the advancement of its students. The event treated translation education as more than just a technical process, viewing it as a path for artistic, cultural, and professional development.
