Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Atatürk Research and Application Center (ATAUM) and EMU Atatürk Ideology Club (ADK) co-organized an exhibition and a musical recital event titled “Atatürk and 19 May” on the occasion of 19 May – Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.
Held on Tuesday, 20 May 2025 at 10:30 a.m. in from of EMU Rector’s Office building, the event was attended by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu and Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren, EMU General Secretary Derviş Ekşici, administrative and academic staff members and, students.
The event commenced with observation of a minute of silence and the national anthem, then continued with a speech delivered by Zeynep Nisa Berk on behalf of EMU ADK. Zeynep Nisa Berk underscored that 19 May 1919, represents far more than just a date—it signifies the awakening of a nation. Reflecting on the day’s profound historical importance, she affirmed, “As the youth, we remain committed to preserving and honouring the values entrusted to us”.
EMU ATAUM academic staff member Dr. Devran Kaya took the floor to welcome attendees to the event marking the 106th anniversary of 19 May– the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. In his address, Dr. Kaya reflected on the profound significance of 19 May 1919, in Turkish history, emphasizing it as the day that sparked the Turkish War of Independence. He underscored the importance of commemorating this milestone annually, as a reflection of Atatürk’s enduring trust in and dedication to the youth. Dr. Kaya concluded by celebrating the young generation, who serve as beacons of the future, and extended his best wishes for a meaningful Youth and Sports Day.
We Remain Committed To Guiding and Supporting Our Youth at Every Step
In his address, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç highlighted the significance of coming together to celebrate with pride and enthusiasm the 106th anniversary of 19 May, the day that marked the start of the Turkish War of Independence and when the Turkish nation declared its resolute pursuit of freedom and sovereignty to the world. Prof. Dr. Kılıç reminded listeners that 19 May was a gift from Atatürk to the youth of Türkiye, and emphasized that its observance as Youth and Sports Day is a profound testament to Atatürk’s trust and esteem for young people. Speaking directly to the youth, Prof. Dr. Kılıç stated, “This day belongs to you. Beyond being a celebration, it symbolizes the confidence placed in you. You are the foundation of our future and the promise of our nation. To honor the faith our Great Leader has in you, persevere with determination and steadfast belief, overcoming all obstacles to create a bright future for yourselves, your country, and your people. At EMU, committed to cultivating enlightened, questioning, and globally minded individuals, we pledge to continually guide our youth. I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of 19 May – Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, and pay deepest respect and gratitude to the founder of our Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his comrades in arms, our honored martyrs, and veterans.”
Following the opening remarks, attendees enjoyed a piano-accompanied musical recital by Göktuğ Sevinç, a student from the Faculty of Education’s Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program, followed by a tour of the exhibition.
