A cleaning campaign was organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector’s Office with the aim of contributing the cleanliness of the campus and raising awareness on the issue. The event organized by the EMU General Secretary’s Office, was held on Tuesday, 8 October 2024 at 04:00 p.m., starting from EMU Main Entrance and taking place at various places within the campus. Receiving great participation, EMU President of Board of Trustees (VYK) Dr. Erdal Özcenk, Acting General Secretary Derviş Ekşici, Academic, Administrative and Working Personnel members as well as EMU students attended the said campaign event.
The cleaning campaign, carried out with considerable commitment, aimed to set a benchmark for making the EMU campus cleaner, more modern, and more livable. EMU Acting General Secretary Derviş Ekşici highlighted that the campus is a living space for both students and staff, stressing that a clean and modern environment improves the effectiveness of education and work. Furthermore, Ekşici stated that the purpose of the event was to promote awareness of environmental cleanliness and to cultivate a heightened consciousness on this issue.
“We will have a Cleanlier Environment if Everyone Takes Responsibility”
EMU President of VYK Dr. Erdal Özcenk also made remarks about the cleaning campaign, saying; “Unfortunately, our country is very dirty and the situation is poor everywhere. If everyone took the initiative to clean in front of their homes, we could achieve a cleaner environment. Many countries practice this, but we do not. I hope that we can cultivate this awareness moving forward. During my time in Parliament, I put in a lot of effort to incorporate cleanliness topics into the curriculum under ‘Environment’, but unfortunately, that did not come to fruition. I hope that in the future, this education will start in elementary schools and help instil the awareness”.
