Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture celebrated the World Architecture Day 2025 during a special seminar organized with the theme of ‘Design for Strength’ set by the International Union of Architects (UIA).
This year’s theme of ‘Design for Strength’ underscores the importance of architecture in strengthening societal resilience during crises, safeguarding cultural heritage, and inspiring hope in times of uncertainty. The International Union of Architects, established after a period of war, selected this theme reflecting its belief that architecture serves not as an instrument of destruction but as a vehicle for reconstruction, memory, and dignity.
Within the scope of the event organized by EMU Department of Architecture, Architect Onur Olguner, the Chair of Chamber of Architects under the Chamber of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB), attended the event as a speaker delivering a presentation titled “Design for Strength”. During the presentation, Olguner provided examples and explored the ways in which architecture can support community resilience, preserve cultural continuity, and promote a sustainable future.
The event concluded with Head of the EMU Department of Architecture Prof. Dr. Rafooneh M. Sani presenting Architect Onur Olguner with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their valuable contributions. World Architecture Day 2025 event brought students, academics and professionals together, creating awareness on the ethical, cultural and humanistic aspects of architecture.
World Architecture Day
Observed annually on the first Monday of October, World Architecture Day was introduced by the UIA in 1948 to emphasize the influence of architecture on society, culture, and the environment. The day serves to recognize and remind people of the vital role architects play in building a more resilient, sustainable, and liveable world.
