Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Nursing Club organized a meaningful event within the scope of 1-31 October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Held at the EMU Faculty of Health Sciences building, the event aimed to raise awareness on breast cancer and to underscore the importance of early diagnosis.
Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, Dean of EMU Health Sciences Faculty; Prof. Dr. Sevinç Taştan, Head of the Department of Nursing; Prof. Dr. Hatice Bebiş, Chair of the Nursing Club, Club Supervisor and academic staff member Dr. Sinem Dağ Canatan, faculty and club members, and students attended the said event.
“A True Joy to Contribute to Community Awareness”
In her remarks, Prof. Dr. Sevinç Taştan underlined that nursing is a profession that goes beyond treatment — it also encompasses prevention, education, and public awareness. Emphasizing the significance of nursing students actively participating in such initiatives, Prof. Dr. Taştan stated, “It is a true joy for us to contribute to community awareness alongside our students today. Activities like this not only deepen our students’ understanding of professional responsibility but also strengthen their engagement with the community”.
“Early Diagnosis Saves Lives”
Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç pointed out that breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in women and stressed that early detection can save lives. She remarked, “Early diagnosis greatly increases the chances of successful treatment. We take great pride in working with our students to raise awareness about this important issue”.
During the event, members of the Nursing Club distributed informative leaflets, informed participants about the importance of early detection, and provided a hands-on demonstration on how to perform breast self-examinations. Participants also expressed their support by wearing pink ribbons, the universal symbol of breast cancer awareness.
To conclude the program, Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, Head of the Nursing Department Prof. Dr. Sevinç Taştan, Chair of the Nursing Club Prof. Dr. Hatice Bebiş, Club Supervisor and academic staff member Dr. Sinem Dağ Canatan, and members of the Nursing Club released symbolic pink balloons into the sky, highlighting the message “Early Diagnosis Saves Lives.” The event ended with a group photo session.
