Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Department of Translation and Interpretation under the Arts and Sciences Faculty, once again organized its traditional “Audiovisual Translation Days” event held interruptedly for the last 16 years. This year’s event took place on 2-4 June 2026 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall.
As part of the event, final-year students of the Department of Translation and Interpretation presented their subtitle projects prepared for a diverse selection of films, ranging from cult classics and popular biographical productions to gripping thrillers.
Seminars on Translation Process and Strategies
The event featured subtitle translation projects prepared by final-year students Başak Sude Akgül, Elif Serra Yaman, Onur Şahin, Simay Zeynep Özveren, and Türkan Sarıtaş. Alongside presenting their professional subtitle work, the students conducted seminars before each screening, discussing the translation challenges they encountered and the strategies they adopted throughout the process.
These seminars stood out as a reflection of the academic knowledge, guidance, and collective effort imparted by the department’s faculty members throughout the students’ four-year undergraduate education. The event was further enriched by workshop activities, which form an integral part of the department’s practice-oriented educational approach.
“An Important Step in Preparing for the Profession”
Commenting on the event, Project Advisor and Department Coordinator, Lecturer Neslihan Binatlı Hekimoğlu, emphasized the significance of the Audiovisual Translation Days for students’ professional development. Hekimoğlu noted that the event provided students with an opportunity to put the theoretical knowledge they had acquired throughout their four-year education into practice. She further stated that initiatives of this kind play a vital role in preparing students for the professional demands of the translation industry.

Remarking on the matter, Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting, Assist. Prof. Dr. Can Altay Sancar, stated that the subtitle projects conducted by the students were highly valuable from both academic and professional perspectives. Expressing his satisfaction with the continued success of the event over the years, Dr. Sancar noted that the Audiovisual Translation Days would continue to be organized with the same commitment and dedication in the years ahead.
