EMU Graduate Alihan Keskin Takes Part in Restoration of one of a kind ‘Kubbe-i Hadra’

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture graduate Dr. Alihan Keskin has gained significant recognition for his construction work both domestically and internationally. Graduating in the 2001-2002 Academic Year, Dr. Keskin worked as a site manager on restoration projects for historical buildings belonging to public institutions in Türkiye’s Central Anatolia Region, particularly between 2011 and 2023. Dr. Keskin contributed to the restoration of the Mausoleum of Hazrat Mevlana and, from 2020 to 2024, oversaw the restoration of the Kubbe-i Hadra, a one-of-a-kind structure in the world.

Led Restoration Work of a Unique Architectural Work

Construction of Kubbe-i Hadra began in 1274 and is distinguished by its unique turquoise-colored tiles. The structure underwent its most extensive restoration phase in 2020 as part of a project involving Dr. Keskin who led the restoration efforts, overseeing the replacement of the mausoleum’s tiles, the design of the wooden interior scaffolding, and the preservation of the structure. The wooden scaffolding designed by Dr. Keskin was officially recognized by the Konya Branch of the Chamber of Architects (TMMOB) and was showcased in national architecture exhibitions.

Carried Out Scientific Studies and Academic Publications

Dr. Keskin played a crucial role in the restoration of the Kubbe-i Hadra, not only as an architect but also as an academic researcher. His research on the materials and techniques used in the restoration was presented at international conferences and featured in prestigious publications. Dr. Keskin conducted scientific studies on various aspects of the restoration, including testing the adhesives for the mausoleum’s tiles and designing the wooden interior scaffolding, while documenting each phase of the process.

His work gained significant attention in both national and international media, with interviews on television channels like TRT Avaz and Kanal 3. Dr. Keskin also gave presentations to students and public officials during the restoration, sharing his insights and expertise on cultural heritage preservation.

Stressing that his education at EMU has been key to his professional and academic success and noting that the university’s solid academic foundation and forward-thinking approach to education have had a significant impact on his achievements internationally, Dr. Keskin pointed out that the practical training and innovative architectural approach provided by EMU have enabled him to reach such notable accomplishments in his field. As an EMU graduate, he expressed immense pride in contributing to such a major project, stating, “It is a great honor for me to be involved in such an important project as a graduate of EMU”.
