Within the scope of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) 27th Spring Festival events, organized with communication sponsorship of North Cyprus Turkcell and media sponsorship of NRG Creative, the award-winning and sold-out theatre play of Istanbul State Theatre titled “Profesyonel / Professional” was performed in the Turkish of Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), hosted by EMU.
The play “Profesyonel,” held with the contributions of the EMU Theatre Club, was staged exclusively for EMU students on Thursday, 15 May 2025, at 06:00 p.m. at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center, free of charge. Following the highly attended student performance, a public showing took place on Friday, 16 May, 2025, at 07:00 p.m. The performances were also attended by the EMU Acting Rector and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu, and Vice Rector for Promotion and Institutional Communication Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren.
The play, written by the internationally renowned Serbian writer Dušan Kovačević, is a dark comedy that skilfully blends humour with deep reflection. “Profesyonel” delves into the political dynamics surrounding the collapse of Yugoslavia through a striking encounter between a former government official and a writer. It follows the life of an intellectual in constant conflict with the system, encouraging the audience to engage in both a historical evaluation and a personal ethical examination.
Under the direction of esteemed director Işıl Kasapoğlu, the production starred notable Turkish theatre artists such as Yetkin Dikinciler, Bülent Emin Yarar, Gülen Çehreli, and Cenap Oğuz in principal roles. The event offered theatre lovers a chance to experience a distinguished work of Turkish theatre, with the audience giving the performers a lengthy standing ovation in appreciation of their compelling stage presence.
